Bristol Children's Hospital (Profile)

The Bristol Congenital Heart Centre (BCHC) provides a comprehensive congenital cardiology & cardiac surgical service to the South West of England as well as an interventional and congenital cardiac surgical service to South Wales. The BCHC caters for all ages from the fetus through childhood to adult life. All cardiac surgery and cardiac catheterisation in children is undertaken at the BRHC. The adult congenital service is delivered at the BRI.

The paediatric service is based at the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children (BRHC) with peripheral specialist clinics in Truro, Plymouth, Torbay, Exeter, Barnstaple, Taunton, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bath & Swindon. The unit is supported by 2 clinical nurse specialists and a clinical psychologist.

The Adult Congenital Heart Unit - also known as the GUCH or Grown-up Congenital Heart Unit - is based in Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) and is on the same campus as Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. The unit also holds a high-risk pregnancy clinic in the adjacent St Michael's Hospital. Satellite clinics are held in Exeter, Swindon, Truro, Barnstaple, Torbay, Taunton and Cheltenham. The unit is supported by 2 clinical nurse specialists.

The fetal cardiology service is undertaken in close collaboration with the Regional Fetal Medicine unit based at St Michaels Hospital. There is a well established Telemedicine link with the Fetal Medicine Unit in Truro for remote fetal (and paediatric) cardiac diagnosis.

Colleagues based at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, deliver an equivalent diagnostic inpatient and outpatient service, to South Wales.
